Gloeocapsa Magma – This is the algae that cause the black streaks or as some call them, roof stains on your roofing material. While you may have just started to notice it on your roof it has been around for many years, especially down in the southern states. This algae likes warm humid conditions and is usually noticed on the north facing slopes first due to the fact that the north side usually holds moisture longer than the other side of the roof.
This algae is carried from roof to roof by wind, birds and other animals that get on top of roofs. Once you see the black streak start to show up your whole roof is usually infested. The dark stain is the result of the algae decomposing as it eats its way across your roof.
So just what this algae eating? This algae feeds on the limestone filler used in todays shingles to give the shingles weight. Over time the algae will cause the ceramic granules to loosen and wash off with the rain, thereby shortening the life span of your roofing material. With the cost of roof replacement at an all time high it makes economic sense to maintain your roof to get the full 20-30 or even 40 years out of it.
Did you know that more than half of all roof replacements in the midwest did not need to be replaced, that a proper roof cleaning would have provided the correct fix to the roofing issue, and at a much lower cost to the homeowner. Many roofing contractors will wrongly state that the stains are water stains or that the asphalt is showing thru the shingle. Some roofing companies do not know that the stains can be cleaned or that the shingle manufactures even recommend that they be cleaned, some on the other hand know that they can be cleaned but refuse to inform the homeowner because it would take thousands of dollars out of their pocket.
(we recommend Above Roofing to all of our clients whose roofs are in need of replacement instead of a cleaning)
Professional roof cleaning companies will tell you if your roof is in need of replacement or if it just needs a cleaning. So if you are thinking that your roof needs to be replaced, call a certified roof cleaning company and get their thoughts. You just may save yourself many thousands of dollars. Roof replacement can run $5,000 – $15,000 depending on the roof, a proper softwash roof cleaning will usually run less than a thousand and in some cases less than $500.00.
Black Streaks are no cause for alarm, they can and should be cleaned by a company that is authorized and certified in the proper SoftWash techniques so that you can get the full lifespan out of the shingles.
